Rose Care Notes
*When to plant...
The planting of roses may take place at any time of the
year, as all of our roses are container grown. In very hot
weather it is preferable to plant late in the afternoon.
*Where to plant...
The preferred situation for a rose should have 6 hours of
sun a day. Roses perform best away from invasive tree roots
in an open position.
*Soil preparation...
Prepare to a depth of 0.5m. Use 1 bag of Melville Nursery
Rose Planting Mix or 1 bag of good quality potting mix and
1 bag of sheep manure mixed together, per rose bush. If unable
to use potting mix use 3 parts sheep manure to 1 part sand.
*How to plant...
Plant rose bush to the level that it is in the pot. A handful
of 'slow release' fertiliser (9 month), may be added to the
soil under the pot at time of planting. Stake until established.
Water in thoroughly. Do not fertilise at this time.
*Mulching...
Mulching is very beneficial to roses. In October/November
pea-hay or natural sheep manure should be applied to a depth
of 50-75 mm.
*Fertilising...
Fertilising can commence once a new rose has put on about
50mm of new growth. Roses do respond well to regular feeding
every 6-8 weeks. An 'all-purpose' garden fertiliser should
give a good balance of flowers and foliage and is recommended.
*To what size will that rose bush grow?...
Sizes have been supplied so that you might have a fair idea
of what to expect of a rose planted in your garden. Please
note, however, any information provided can only be taken
as a guide. Ultimate size is dependant upon the variable
factors of cultivation (water, fertilising, pruning, dealing
with diseases), climate, location and soil.
*Standard and Weeping Roses...
Standard Roses require more watering than the average rose
bush and will need thorough, regular watering all throughout
the year. Standards should be firmly secured to a stake,
strong enough to support the weight of a mature standard
or weeper. A metal stake is recommended. 'New-season' Weeping
Roses may be ready for purchase on Ist September and should
be available for collection in November (weather permitting!).
Please phone to confirm dates. Ordering is essential.
*New roses require a minimum of 5 litres of water daily
for the first summer, then after twice weekly will be adequate
with regular hand watering.
